The collection contains Bruce's eight diaries, 1920-1959, kept during his travels in Europe and Africa; while serving in the U.S. Office of Strategic Services in Europe and Africa; and while in London, Paris, and Washington, D.C. (the latter concerning his resignation as U.S. Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany). Also contains his letters, 1918-1924, to Louise Este Fisher Bruce and William Cabell Bruce while in the U.S. Army and traveling in Europe, and essays concerning canes, cookery, dancing, wine, and the Palace of Popes, Avignon, France. There is also correspondence, 1949-1968, while serving as U.S. Ambassador to France and Great Britain and in Washington, D.C.; speeches, 1924-1971, delivered while serving as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce and U.S. Ambassador to France, the Federal Republic of Germany, and Great Britain; notes for the speeches; essays; newspaper articles by and about him, including likenesses; and a transcript of a 1964 interview with him by Philip Axtell Crowl. Also included is a speech, 1969, by Richard M. Nixon; notes on wine and the Bruce family; and "Footprints on the sands of time" (1945) by Louise Este Fisher Bruce concerning her activities in Baltimore and Virginia.
